Métamorphose, peinture sur toile mixte, huile et collage, février 2016

"Métamorphose" est le nom de mon dernier tableau conçu en technique mixte, composé de collages papier et de peinture à l'huile. D'ordinaire, j'utilise plutôt la peinture acrylique, mais pour ce tableau, j'ai choisi l'huile pour son temps de séchage plus long permettant de réaliser de multiples retouches ou variations de teintes et de nuances. La difficulté pour cette toile, a été, pour moi, la création des différents tons de couleur des deux parties du visage. Pour obtenir un contraste et faire ressortir le portrait de la femme, j'ai apporté un aspect ancien grâce à la texture de papiers collés sur la toile, j'ai ensuite appliqué la peinture à l'huile en frottant et en patinant sur les zones plus texturées. J'ai voulu des couleurs claires et contrastées, pas trop prononcées pour le fond. Pour renforcer l'effet vieillissant du fond, j'ai rajouté une bande de papier déchiré à la verticale, dans les teintes jaune orangées.

Unemployed Professors

Contrasted with other advanced countries, in the US schools for privileged kids are better funded than schools for average income or poor kids. Other nations try to budget more for poor areas, not less.

The Finnish govt allocates extra funds for places where parents had fewer high school diplomas or have high joblessness or more immigrants, or those with special education needs.

The key difference---Finnish schools are funded with more uniform tax rates and by a much broader swath of society than just their locality.

American school funding relying on property taxes has great disparities in different districts due to much higher property values in wealthy areas. They get better paid teachers, more courses, newer technology.

A US federal commission of 27 educators reported that funding schools by property taxes is entirely unsuited to an advanced 21st C nation. Instead of freeing children from the circumstances of their birth, the US system does the opposite... it cements the dependency of children on their parents wealth or lack of it. This is diametrically opposed to the whole tradition of American democracy, and using education to advance opportunity and meritocracy.
